Place a marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist the work.

Rows 1-3 - k1, p1 (1x1 ribbing). The hat will now be about 1/2" high.

Rows 4-16 (or 3") - Knit. The hat will now be about 3" high.

Rows 17-36 (or 6.5") - Switch to yellow color and Knit. The hat will now be about 6 1/2" high.

On the side opposite the working yarn, transfer 16 stitches to a size US 10.5 Double Pointed Needle, removing any markers as you go.

Transfer 16 stitches to the second needle, removing any markers as you go.

Transfer 16 stitches to the third needle, removing any markers as you go.

Transfer 16 stitches to the fourth needle, removing any markers as you go.

Your work should now be on your 4 double pointed needles.

Row 37 - Using the 5th needle join in the round, K2tog entire row. Be sure to pull the first stich of each DPN snug so there are no gaps in your work. You will now have 8 stitches on each needle for a total of 24 stitches.

Row 38 - k2tog entire row. Be sure to pull the first stitch of each DPN snug so there are no gaps in your work. You will now have 4 stitches on each needle for a total of 16 stitches.

Row 39 - K2tog entire row. Be sure to pull the first stitch of each DPN snug so there are no gaps in your work. you will now have 2 stitches on each needle for a total of 8 stitches.

Cut the yarn, leaving about a 12" tail. Thread the tail onto a needle and run needle through all 8 stitches.

Pull out the DPNS and drop the needle through the hat so you can cinche it shut from the inside.

Weave in and tie off any other yarn tails you may have EXCEPT for your original cast on tail.

Locate the cast on tail at the back of the hat. Count 6 stitches, then add stitches 7 through 27 onto a DPN. You will have 20 stitches on the DPN.

Repeat this process so your other DPN has 20 stitches on it as well.

Turn the hat upside down and begin knitting the ear flaps. Take special care to knit on the 'outside' of the hat and 'purl' on the inside so everything looks nice.

Row 1-20 - Knit the odd rows and Purl the even rows. Take special care to make sure you knit on the 'outside' of the hat and purl on the 'inside' of the hat. Pull the first stitch of each row snuggly.

Row 21 - Knit entire row. K2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 18 stitches.

Row 22 - Purl entire row. P2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 16 stitches.

Row 23 - Knit entire row. K2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 14 stitches.

Row 24 - Purl entire row. P2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 12 stitches.

Row 25 - Knit entire row. K2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 10 stitches.

Row 26 - Purl entire row. P2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 8 stitches.

Row 27- Knit entire row. K2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 6 stitches.

Row 28 - Purl entire row. P2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 4 stitches.

Row 29- K2tog the first two and last two stitches together. You will now have 2 stitches.

Row 30 - P2tog. You will now have 1 stitch.

Cut the yarn leaving a 12 inch tail and thread onto a needle. Run the needle through the last loop, but do not remove the DPN yet.

Cut two more 12" lengths, threading each through needle. You will now have 5 yarn 'ends'

Knot the ends together twice and cut at off at the same length.

Repeat above rows 1-30 for the second ear flap.

Trace two 3 1/2 inch circles on cardboard and cut out. I found that the lid of a regular soda at just about any fast food place was the perfect size.

Trace a 3/4" circle from the middle. I found that the cap of a bath and body works lotion was nearly perfect. You can of course use a compass.

Cut out the small holes--I found that a box cutter worked wonderfully.

Cut two long pieces of red yarn. I did two pieces of red yarn that spanned both my arms. Cut one long piece of orange. One long piece of yellow. You will want twice as much red as yellow. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard closely enough that no cardboard is showing.

When you run out of yarn, simply leave it hanging and cut 2 more lengths of red, 1 of orange and 1 of yellow. Keep on wrapping until there is no more cardboard showing. The more you wrap it, the fluffier the pompom will be.

Weasel your scissors between the two layers of cardboard and cut around the edges.

Cut 1 long length of yellow yarn and pull it around the center, knotting several times.

Knot several more times on the opposite side.

Wiggle the cardboard off the top and bottom of the yarn pompom.

Hold the pompom up by any unusually long pieces and snip them so they are the same length as the others.

Thread both ends of the pompom into the hat. Turn the hat inside out and knot the yarn several times on the inside of the hat so it does not come loose. Snip off the excess yarn.

You now have a very cunning hat!
