Needle Size: US 6, DPNs or 16" Circular AND US 7 DPNS and/or 16" Circular

In retrospect, the circular knitting needles would have been easier for the bulk of the project.

These are the colors that Kirk Ryan Jr's mother picked out

Cast on 64 stitches. I used knitted cast on method.

Divide stitches among 4 DPNS, you should have 16 stitches on each needle.

Since these stitches will have to be picked up and knitted later, I went ahead and ran some blue thread through them, using a tapestry needle, to make them easier to pick up later.

Join in the round, placing a stitch marker after the first stitch.

Rows 1-15 - Knit entire row. The work should measure about 2 inches.

Ear Flaps
Note: ear gaps are done in short rows/wrap and turn.

Video on Short Rows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfGpKiNfQmk

Row 16 - Bring yarn to the front and Purl 6 stitches. Move yarn to the back and Knit 15 stitches.

Row 28 - Knit 4 Stitches. Wrap and turn.
Row 29 - Purl 3 Stitches. Wrap and turn.
Row 30 - Knit 2 Stitches. Wrap and turn.

You will now be at the very bottom of the ear flap and will start working back up. This creates the inside lining and looks a bit like a pocket at first.

Row 31 - Purl 2 Stitches. Wrap and turn.
Row 32 - Knit 3 Stitches. Wrap and turn.
Row 33 - Purl 4 Stitches. Wrap and turn.

You are now done with ear flap 2!

Row 74 - Bring yarn to front and Purl 6 stitches to the end of needle 4, which is also the end of the round.

 Rows 75 - 87 - Knit entire row

Pick up the original cast on stitches with size 6 needles, if needed.

Combine the Inner and Outer Lining into a single layer.

Knit until the hat is about 4 inches. (64 sts)

Note: In retrospect I think 3 inches would have been better for a newborn.

Shape the crown

Row 1 - K8, k2tog entire row (58 sts)
Row 2 - Knit entire row

Cut the working yarn and thread onto a needle. Run through remaining stitches. Weave in/cut off on the inside of the hat.

Spikes (Make 8 or 9)

Note: I didn't like the way the original spikes were made, so I used the spikes from Steve the Stegasaurus.

Cast on 10 stitches using knitted cast on method, leaving a 12" tail to stitch the spike on with later.

Divide 10 stitches among 3 needles (3, 4, 3) and join in the round.

Earthbound Map Onett Cross Stitch Project

Earthbound was my favorite childhood game. If you don't know what it is, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EarthBound

This is the piece of cloth for the project. It is about 30" x 30". If I stitch 156 stitches every single day, this project should be done in a year.

Stitch 1 of 56832

The first day's work. 143 stitches. Looks like the project will take over a year at this rate!!
